Acuarela
This is known as a gay and lesbian café, but everyone is welcome. It is quite cozy inside with small tables pushed close together, but somehow manages to avoid being claustrophobic. The interior is charming and has creative decorations that liven things up. There are a number of paintings on the walls displaying work of local artists and are sometimes for sale. The drinks here are good and include a variety of teas, coffees, fruit juices, beers, wines and cocktails. Snacks and light meals are served thoughout the day. There is a huge window in the front which makes a perfect spot for people-watching. This café is right around the corner from the Plaza de Chuece, the centre of the city’s gay scene.

Café Belén
A beautiful little café whose name means “Bethlehem,” here you can relax in a a quiet and comfortable setting. The drinks include a wide selection of coffees, juices, wines, beers and spirits. The décor that makes this place stand out is the antique furniture, which together with the ancient exposed wood of the ceiling create an old-world atmosphere and give the café character. The music is never loud here, so it is a good place to come to chat.

Café El Botánico
This café has the atmosphere of an English tea room, and is centrally located right by the Prado Museum and the Jardín Botánico from which it gets its name. Inside it is welcoming and nicely decorated with has classic dark wood furnishings and walls with exposed bricks. The breakfasts here are particularly good, and they also serve heartier meals throughout the day. There are a wide variety of pastries on offer, and the homemade specials change reguarly. The coffee is great here, and they also make a number freshly-squeezed juices.

Salón del Prado
This stylish café has only been around for twenty years, but cultivates an old-fashioned atmosphere. The décor of swirly candelebras, ornate mirrors and other Edwardian-style furnishings makes one feel that one has stepped into another era. And probably for this reason, one of the cafés claims to fame is that several movie scenes and commericials have been shot here. There is also an exhibition area in the main hall dedicated to sculpture, where every month a different sculptor has the opportunity to display his work.
The drinks here are good and coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages are the main drinks of choice. Cold canapes are also served.

Café Unión
A popular musicians hang-out due to its location next to the Teatro Real, this café is known for its festive and artsy atmosphere. Often you will find spontaneous concerts taking place here, and others are organized in advance. Located in an old building, the café has a somewhat late 19th century feel. This is an ideal place to stop for a drink before or after a concert. The coffee and cocktails are excellent, and a wide variety of other drinks are served. The walls are covered with art work, and is a place for local artists to exhibit their works. Most of them are paintings or photographs, but sometimes pottery is displayed as well. Every year, the café organizes a popular photography competition.

Café Gijón
This café has a long history and opened in 1888. Since its early days it has been known as a meeting point for writers and intellectuals. This tradition still holds, and it is common to find the place full of journalists, writers and artists. Some famous poets and novelists who have spent time here include Federico García Lorca, Antonio Machado, Rubčn Darío and Pérez Galdós. The café serves a variety of traditional dishes and also some international cuisine, with the emphasis on meat dishes and seafood. The drinks are good and feature some fine Spanish wines.

Viva Madrid
A popular nightlife spot, this bar gets very crowded and lively after about 11 pm. It is known as a good place to chat with friendly locals as well as meet other international tourists and has a very welcoming atmosphere. Located in the centre of town, it is convenient to get to, and there are a number of nice outdoor tables in the summer. They play a variety of music, including a lot of flamenco. During the day, tapas is served with drinks and you can also order more substantial food. The décor includes some beautiful painted tiles on the walls, depicted scenes of 20th century Madrid.

Balmoral
This is an upmarket bar known for its elaborate cocktails. It has a relaxed atmosphere and no background music, and takes pride in having won Newsweek’s “Best Bar in Europe” prize twice. There are more than 100 cocktails to choose from, some of the most popular including the Balmoral, “Bullet Shot,” and Bloody Mary. The décor is unusual and is made up of Tudor-style furniture and red and ochre colours everywhere.

Cervecería Alemana
This is one of the most popular and well-known bars in the city, and has been a favourite of various celebrities over the years, including Ernest Hemingway, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner. There are all kinds of drinks and a number of good tapas dishes to choose from. The décor as well as the waiters’ outfits are old-fashioned and give the bar a distinctive historic atmosphere. There are marble-topped tables, dark wood panelling and interesting pictures on the walls.

El Anciano Rey de los Vinos
This bar is located in the centre near to the Royal Palace and maintains an old fashioned atmosphere. Established in 1909, it has changed little since and has kept much of the original décor. They also display a series of photographs of Madrid from the early 1900s, showing many characteristic and interesting aspects of the city. The wine here is well-known to be good, and spirits and beer are also popular. A number of snacks are served, featuring some delicious homemade desserts.

La Dolores
A classic tapas bar, La Dolores serves some of the best canapés and beer in the city. It is a very popular place and is often crowded around the bar. The décor is welcoming and rustic, with lots of old wooden furniture and earthenware jugs, and the exterior has a beautiful mosaic façade. The tapas and canapés tend to be elaborately prepared and are genuinely tasty. There are also a variety of raciónes and fish dishes prepared in almost every possible way.
