Restaurants

Madrid has the biggest variety of cuisine and some of the best restaurants in Spain, and is a good city for those who want to eat quality food without spending a lot of money. When exploring the city’s many restaurants, it is a good idea to eat some of the typical food of the region, as it will be among the tastiest on offer as well as the most reasonably priced. Many restaurants as well as bars serve a wide selection of tapas dishes, and this is a great way to sample different Spanish delights. In addition to the local specialties, you can find restaurants specializing in food from every region of the country, as well as international fare. The most ubiquitous non-Spanish food is American fast food chains and Chinese restaurants, but it is possible to find really good ethnic food if you know where to look. There are a number of good French, Italian, Latin American, North African and Asian restaurants in the city. And vegetarian restaurants do exist, despite Spain’s reputation as a meat-loving country. They are still rather though few and far between, but are becoming more and more popular.

The Spanish cuisine
Madrid’s cuisine shares characteristics with many of the other regional Spanish cuisines, though also has some distinctive elements of its own. Ever since the city became the capital, it has drawn culinary inspiration and influences from all over the country. Many typical Madrid dishes are called madrileño, which refers to a “hotpot” or stew. One of these dishes that has always been associated with Madrid is cocido madrileño, a delicious combination of garbanzo beans, vegetable, cabbage, chorizo and occasionally other meats. Other typical Spanish dishes you will find here include Aranjuez asparagus and garlic soup. Spain is a country known for its meat specialties, and there are many delicious lamb, veal, rabbit and beef dishes served everywhere, prepared in a wide variety of ways. Though Madrid is surrounded by land, it also has some of the best and freshest seafood in the country. Fish dishes are among the most popular here and Spain is the biggest seafood-eating country in the world after Japan. Tapas is another famous element of the Spanish cuisine, and comprises small portions of a variety of traditional dishes.
