Shopping
Madrid offers wonderful and varied shopping opportunites for people of all ages and tastes. Many of the shops and shopping centres in the city centre are open all day, not closing for a lunch break as is common elsewhere. The five main shopping districts in the city are located in the Salamanca, Chueca, Centro, Princesa and Cuatro Caminos areas. The Salamanca quarter is home to the most elegant and exclusive shops, including primarily designer clothing stores, antiques, books, jewellers and art galleries. Chueca shops are distinguished by their avant-garde trendiness, and cater toward an artsy crowd. Here you will find a variety of shoe and record stores, bookshops, and some wild hairstylists.
The oldest shopping are is located in the streets around Plaza Mayor, the Gran Via and the Puerta del Sol. There are a number of popular markets in this area, as well as many shops specializing in crafts. You will find stores devoted to ceramics, leather products, musical instruments, flamenco clothing and accessories, and a wide range of other handiwork.
There are a few periods throughout the year when shops all over the country hold sales, and you can find amazing bargains during these times. The winter sale period begins the second week of January and goes through February, and the summer sales take place from July 1st through August.
Betula Libros
This bookshop offers a wide range of fiction, nonfiction and other books, mostly in Spanish, as well as some academic books, specializing in psycology and education.
