by air
Madrid’s airport in Barajas International Airport, and is located 13 km (8 miles) outside of the city centre. The airport has three terminals, but most of the international flights arrive at terminal 1. There is a bus from the airport called the EMT bus that leaves every ten minutes for the city bus terminal at Plaza de Colón. This ride takes approximately 45 minutes, the same as by car or taxi. If you take a taxi from the airport, do not accept rides from the drivers inside the terminals, but go instead to the taxi ranks outside. The Barajas metro line 8 provides the fastest way into the centre, though you have to change to line 4 at Mar de Cristal.

by train
The name of the railway network througout Spain is the RENFE. Madrid has two main train stations, Estración de Chamartín in the north of the city and Estración de Atocha in the south. Both are destinations for international trains and places where you can catch long-distance or commuter trains. Atocha is the larger station, and more international trains leave from here, as well as the majority of highspeed AVE trains travelling to Cordoba, Seville and other Spanish cities to the south and west. There is also a metro stop called Atocha, not to be confused with the train station, as they are not directly connected. Charmartín station has more trains going to Spanish cities to the north and east of Madrid. It is necessary to book your seat ahead on long-distance trains, and it is usually cheaper the sooner you do it. The network of commuter trains in Madrid is known as Cercanías and connects outlying towns beyond the reach of the metro.
Train tickets can be bought at the train stations, at the RENFE office on Calle Alcalá, and from travel agents. Student rail passes are available for long distance trains within Spain, but these are not valid on AVE or EUROMED trains.

by car
Driving is a good way to get around much of Madrid, especially the outskirts and suburbs. Motorways, called autopista, are marked with the letter ‘A,’ and the multi-lane highways connecting cities are marked with an ‘N’. The letter ‘M’ designates Madrid ring roads. Tolls are common on intercity roads, and the speed limit on these roads is usually 120 kph (75 mph). On smaller motorways, the speed limits range from 90 - 100 kph (56 - 62 mph), and in towns the limit is usually 50 kph (31 mph.) Madrid is easily accessible by highways, and has a total of six going in and out of the city, as well as two ring roads. The centre of Madrid is quite crowded with cars, and driving here can be slow and nerve-racking.
