by bus
Busses are a popular form of transportation in Madrid since they cover so much of the city and are generally the cheapest way to get around. The bus system is run by EMT and consists of over 150 lines, reaching not only all over the city but almost every corner of the outlying areas as well. During the day, busses run from 6 am - 11.30 pm. After 11.30 pm, night busses take over, of which there are 20 lines. These are known as “buhos” or owl lines. They start running at midnight and leave every half hour from the central night bus point, which is Plaza de Cibeles. These busses run until 6 am, when the normal schedule resumes.
Regular single tickets can be bought on board the bus. If you buy a ticket for ten rides you get a reduced rate, and these are available at newsstands, tobacco shops and EMT information booths, located at Plaza de Callao and Puerta del Sol. Be aware that the ten - ride tickets are not valid for trips to the airport. For more bus information, check the website: www.ctm-madrid.es.

by metro
The metro is the fastest way to get around in Madrid, and is cheap and efficient. This metro system is the largest and oldest in Spain with twelve lines that cover most of the city and many of the outlying areas. Between 6 am - 2 am there are trains every 3 - 5 minutes. Later at night and on Sundays, they ride less frequently. You can buy ten-ride tickets that are valid on both the metro and the bus. The fare is € 1.10 per single trip and € 5.10 for a ten-ride ticket. You can buy tickets either at the station ticket counters or from machines.

Taxis
The official taxis in Madrid are white with a red diagonal stripe across the front doors and are easy to find. You can hail them on the street, find them in ranks, and of course order them in advance. You will be charged extra for more than one passenger, pick-up at the airport, loading of luggage, and if you phone for a taxi. You should check the meter before you enter to make sure that it is not already running, as this is a common way to scam some extra money from unsuspecting passengers. If you take a taxi from the airport, don’t accept rides from drivers inside the terminals, but go isntead to the official taxi ranks outside. It is normal to tip taxis between 5 - 10% of the bill if you are satisfied with the service.
