Restaurants
The restaurants in Mali Lošinj are centred along the harbour bay “Baldagust”. Most of them are specialised in sea food and fish but serve also meat dishes that are usually a bit cheaper than fish. Typical for this region are also restaurants along the streets with charcoal fires on which they roast lamb or sucking pig. The quality of the restaurants and the service is very good and the prices are usually moderate in comparison to the other Mediterranean countries like Italy and France.
Cuisine
Croatian cuisine is a very varied one that is based on different historical and geographical backgrounds. It includes meat dishes, fish specialities, soups, bacon, cheese and ham. The cuisine at the coast, however, differs from the one in the heartland. It is characterised by typical Mediterranean especially Italian, Greek and French influences. Dishes are often based on fish and sea food that are grilled and flavoured with fresh regional herbs. Besides, Croatians in this area use a lot of Olive oil and fresh vegetables and offer great truffle specialities. Known dishes are "Osoljena", a salted fish, "Istarska Supa", a traditional red wine woup with olive oil and roasted bread as well as white truffles. Common starters are "Prsut", thin slices of air-dried ham served with olives and white bread and the sheep cheese “paski sir”. Although fish is more common in this part of Croatia meat dishes are often cheaper. Meat is used for stews or grilled dishes but also air-dried such as "Ombolo" (air-dried pork chops) or "Zvacet", a ragout made from different sorts of meat.
Usually meals are accompanied by excellent wines of which Croatia has a lot. The history of these wines date back to the Romans and therefore are even older then the French grape varieties. Another speciality is the "Slivovic", a hard liquor made from plums.
