The fastest way to reach the island is by car, although especially during the summer months waiting times at the border can be long. The main way to Slovenia and Croatia is by using the Austrian Motorway Tauernautobahn A10 for which you have to pay a toll. A road tax disc had to be purchased at the latest at the Austrian border.
Travelling by car requires a green insurance card and a valid driver’s license. Cars drive on the right side in Croatia and the speed limit is 130 km/h (81 mph) on motorway, 100 km/h (62 mph) on federal roads, 50 km/h (31 mph) inside a city and 80 km/h (50mph) on highways. Tolls need to be paid on highways, thruways and on bridges. The amount depends on the length of the road and the type of the car. In case of an accident call 92 for the police and 987 for roadway repair service. The alcohol limit lies at 0.0 %.
For renting a car you have to be 23 years of age and be in possession of a valid driver’s license. Most of the car hiring agencies have offices in the big Croatian cities.
Coming from Italy you can cross the border at two points:
Pasjak/Rupa - Opatija - Brestova/Porozina (ferry) - ca. 80 km to Mali or Veli Losinj.
Pasjak/Rupa - Rijeka - Krk - Valbiska/Merag (ferry) - ca. 60 km to Mali or Veli Losinj.

The catamaran is made only for the transportation of people. It operates every morning from the harbour of Mali Lošinj to Rijeka stopping on small islands and Cres. The return journey takes place in the afternoon. As the catamaran is the cheapest way of transportation it is a favourable option to see the surroundings. The schedules for summer and winter differ and of course depend on weather conditions.
