Munich has an impressive cultural history that is mirrored in numerous museums, art galleries, theatres and music venues. In the 19th century Munich was under the patronage of Ludwig I. and II. an important cultural centre and at the beginning of the 20th century it became the leading location of the expressionist movement around the group of the “Blaue Reiter”, which was founded by the Russian Wassily Kandinsky and the Bavarian Franz Marc in 1911. The city is rich in cultural events and musical performances that are known across the borders of Germany. The Bavarian national Opera is immensely rich in superb performances from opera and classical concerts to ballet. The landscape of museums is multi-facetted including nearly every field of interest from cars at the BMW-Museum to the Bavarian National Museum or the toy museum, just to name a few. The annual Oktoberfest attracts people from all over the world who enjoy a festival that fulfils the prejudice of lederhosen-wearing and beer-drinking Germans. And yes, tradition and culture have a high value in Munich. All those who seek some silence and can use the chance for hiking and enjoying the fabulous countryside with the Alps just around the corner.
The tourist information provides a magazine with all events in and around Munich. But most newspapers also have a part with local events and happenings.
