Munich is a paradise for all those who like shopping. The city’s pedestrian area is packed with huge department stores, top designer labels, cheaper fashion chains as well as traditional shops and many great markets. The main shopping streets are Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufingerstrasse where mainly big chains and department stores are located. Smaller, more exclusive boutiques can be found around Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse. But also Schwabing, Haidhausen and the area Glockenbachviertel are very popular when it comes to exclusive boutiques and special shops selling traditional goods. The main attraction, however, is the Viktualienmarkt, a lively market for mainly food, that is located at the end of the pedestrian area at Marienplatz.
Traditional goods and special gifts to bring home are for example the famous “Trachten” which are traditional clothes like Lederhosen and Dirndl, beer mugs made from stone, wood carvings and pewter-ware. Souvenir shops are numerous and often sell a lot of things that remind of your visit to Bavaria’s capital.
Larger shops and departments stores are open between 9 am and 8 pm and on Saturdays between 9 am and 4 pm, smaller shops are usually only open to 6.30 pm and close for a lunch break. On Saturdays they are open until 12 am.
Mehrwertsteuer (VAT) of 19% is included in the price of purchased items, visitors from non-EU countries are entitled to a tax refund of up to 10%. The goods need to have a value above 30 € and need to be bought in one of the participating stores that display a Europe Tax-Free logo.
