Naples has been a centre for the arts since ancient times and is full of museums, galleries, theatres and a variety of cultural events. Of its museums, the National Archaeological Museum is the most acclaimed and unique. It includes art, sculpture and other historical artefacts, including most of the objects excavated from the Pompeii and Herculaneum sites. In addition to the galleries and art museums in Naples, there are several special exhibitions that occur throughout the year. For example, Piazza Plebiscito has become a location for the display of large-scale artworks that change periodically. Naples also has a rich performing arts scene. It is full of many theatres where a variety of plays, dances and other shows are staged, and has a very famous opera house.
