Osservatorio Astronomico
This was the first modern observatory in Europe, constructed in the late eighteenth century and founded in 1819 by the astronomers Giuseppe Piazzi and Federico Zuccari. It is located on the hill of Miradois, 155 metres above Naples, and offers a great view of the city and the gulf as well as the heavens. The observatory no longer carries out scientific research and is now solely a museum and a centre for astronomy conferences. The museum includes a fascinating collection of astronomical equipment from several periods in history and domes through which visitors can view the stars and planets.
