Restaurants
Naples is known for having excellent restaurants and for being a place where people love their food. Naples is the city where pizza originated and local restaurants make much of this fact. Pizzerias are ubiquitous and almost all of very high quality. A variety of other types of restaurants can be found throughout the city, most of which specialize in traditional Italian food of one kind or another, but also several of other nationalities such as Greek, Chinese and Spanish. The volcanic soil of Naples and the surrounding area is one reason why the local produce is so flavourful and delicious.
The Neapolitan Cuisine
Neapolitan cuisine is most famous for dishes such as pizza, pasta with unique sauces, a variety of seafood, pastry desserts and gelato. Its mozzarella de buffula is also world famous and said to be the best in Italy. Many of the characteristic tastes and combinations of food in Naples are the result of the traditional local dishes having mingled with influences from other cultures over the centuries. Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French have all ruled the city at some point, each leaving its own contribution to the local cuisine. Neapolitan recipes are often complicated and elaborate, taking a long time to prepare.
Because of it being the city’s most famous culinary invention, Naples takes great pride in its pizza. Rather than restricting themselves to the traditional recipes, however, Neapolitan pizza makers compete to create tasty new toppings and variations. Many pizzerias put some truly bizarre edibles on the top of their pizzas, and just about every restaurant has invented its own specialty. Naples is also known for superb coffee and limoncello, made from the distinctly flavourful lemons of Sorrento and the Amalfi coast.
