Public Transport
Naples has a new and very well equipped public transportation system with busses, two metro lines and funiculars (tram). Most of them run from early in the morning to midnight.
Tickets must be bought before boarding in magazine shops, tobacco stores or vending machines at the stations. There are tickets for one ride (€ 0.90), one day (€ 2.50), one week (€ 9) or one month (€ 25). The one-ride-ticket ticket is valid for 90 minutes and has to be stamped before staring your journey. All types of tickets can be used in the metro, busses and the famous funiculars.
Naples
by bus
Although busses in Naples are a bit unreliable, it is a good way to get around. Except Sundays and some public holidays the busses run every day from 6 am to 7 pm and at the primary processing times busses could be very crowded. All of them stop at Piazza Garibaldi which is a good starting point for a tour through the city.
UNICO Alibus:
This is a special bus which connects the airport, the train and metro station with the city center (Piazza Municipio – City Hall and Harbor). It departs every 30 minutes and the tickets can be purchased on board (costs around € 3). Be aware that these tickets are not valid on other public transport.
Naples
by metro (underground railway)
Naples has two metro lines: Line 1 goes through the city center and the commercial areas. Line 2, which is the oldest of the city, is the East-West connection. It covers a route of about 16 kms and also offers a connection to Formia and Rome.
For both the rate of the trip is from 6 to 15 minutes.
Line 1: Service runs from 6 am to 11 pm / Sundays to midnight.
Line 2: Service runs from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm.
Naples
by funicular
The famous funiculars are a very popular and a common used public transportation in Naples. There are four different kinds of them and three travel up to the hill of Vómero. The services run from 6.30 / 7 am to 10 pm / 0.30 am – it depends on the line. A special ticket for this transportation is not necessary.
Taxis
Taxis may sometimes be a quick and convenient way to get around in Naples, but are also the most expensive. They can also often be problematic because of Naples’ notoriously congested traffic. Taxis can usually be found lined up at stands or main squares, and you can always call one by phone. Before taking a taxi, make sure that it is a licensed one and has a meter. All licensed taxis have a number and a city crest on the door. Be aware that any piece of luggage will cost an extra surcharge of € 2.60 (prices must be listed by law - do not accept higher fees).
by ferry
Going by ferry is very popular and exiting! From the two harbors Mergellina and Molo Beverello three kind of ferries depart : Traghetti (ferries) which are inexpensive and comfortable, Aliscafi (hydrofoil) which are faster and more expensive and the aquatic-cabs for up to 10 persons. All three start from one of the harbors which are mentioned above and have a lot of stations.
The tickets can be purchased directly at the counter of the port and the costs range from € 5 to € 12.
Please check out the exact departing times for example at the “Qui Napoli“ - Mensile per il turista which is a monthly magazine for tourists.
