Restaurants
Nice is full of restaurants, snack bars, cafes, bars and pubs whose number is clearly due to the high amount of tourists and the excellent weather conditions. Most of the cafes have tables outside in the sun where you can have a drink, lunch or dinner. Especially in the Old Town restaurants, fast food cafes and different other eateries line up close to each other. The prices range from cheap to upscale and the variety of food is indescribable. Especially fish lovers will love Nice as many restaurants serve all kinds of fresh fish and sea food. Also Italian food is very common and extraordinary tasty which is not surprising thanks to the closeness to the Italian border. Vegetarian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Danish, Indian or Russian restaurants and of course traditional French food create a wide range of possibilities for dining and enjoying different tastes in a sunny climate.
Nice’s Cuisine
The French cuisine is known for its excellent food and outstanding recipes. Nevertheless, every region has its own specialities. Most of the dishes in Nice are typically Mediterranean: a lot of vegetables prepared with olive oil and of course every kind of fish and sea food. The region around Nice is known for its excellent olives that are used for tapenade which is served with roasted bread. Nice’s famous dish is the Salade Niçoise made from fresh tomato, salad, anchovy, tuna, olive oil and paprika. But there are also many dishes that are barely know to foreigners such as the “socca”, a special pancake made from chick pea flour. It is eaten from the oven with some pepper and a red wine or a cool rosé. “Tarte aux blettes“ is a cake which is a bit strange for foreign tastes. It is made from apples, raisins, pine nuts and leaf beet. Another typical dish is “Pissaladière“ which is a kind of pizza dough that is only served with steamed onion, garlic, different herbs and some olives and anchovy pieces. Warm served it tastes best. A small favourable snack is “Bruschette”, a kind of bread with olive oil which is roasted and served with all kinds of toppings like a pizza. It is also eaten from the oven but lighter as a pizza. As in the rest of France wine is the most popular drink to go along with food.
