Culture
Oslo, contrary to all prejudices, is very rich in cultural sights and life. The city displays numerous sculptures; the most famous is without doubt the Vigelandspark with 212 sculptures which was created by Gustav Vigeland. Amongst them the well known “Stubborn Child” and the “Monolith”. Especially during summer time the park is packed with people who enjoy their free time. Besides, Olso is the birth place of many famous international artists such as Edvard Munch whose paintings are exhibited in the same named museum “Munch-Museet” as well as in the National Gallery where most Norwegian artists until 1945 are represented. Art after 1945 is shown in the “Samtidskunst” (Museum of Contemporary Art). Apart from the art museums, Oslo possesses many small art galleries in the city centre and its close surroundings. Many artistic objects, however, are embedded in the city life. For example old frame houses in Gamlebyen or the old fortress “Akershus Festning” along the river Akerselva.
Oslo has asserted itself against any prejudice and has developed a lively and adventurous musical scene. International and national first-class musicians have chosen Oslo as their home and many music magazines describe the scene as “Oslo Sound” which mainly concentrates on the young musicians of the house, jazz and electronic music scene. But also Blues, pop, rock and also folklore play an important role in Oslo’s cultural life. Musical festivals like the Norwegian Wood, Øyafestivalen or the Ultima Festivalen annually attract thousands of people. Also many writers used the city as their source for their books. Sigrid Undset, Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Knut Hamsun are some of the most famous ones who not only lived in Oslo but also found the basic material for their literary works in the Norwegian capital.
