Nightlife
Oslo, whose nightlife was said to be boring, now seems to be competing with Stockholm and Copenhagen. Countless bars, cafes and nightclubs offer a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Most of the locations get quite crowded after work but the real nightlife begins later in the evening. Oslo’s nightlife scene is quite alternating – it can happen easily that a location turns virtually overnight from a jazz bar into a glamour disco. Therefore it is quite handy to check the Oslo Guide “What's On in Oslo” which is available in most hotels and at the Tourist Information.
Many international DJs and music stars have rediscovered Oslo and keep the crowds moving and in a good mood. There are many places that offer life music; especially the jazz scene is very reputable and recognised. Many nightclubs are located on and around Karl Johans gate and are open until around 3 am. Many cafes and bars which serve food during the night transform into a night lounge or club around 9 or 10 pm. Although everybody might be able to enter during day time the same doesn’t apply in the evenings. Most of the places have an age limit of 18, 20 or 25 years, others ask for a cover-charge, especially at weekends. Drinking alcohol in Norway is still a very expensive business. The minimum drinking age is 18 years for beer and wine and 20 years for spirits. All restaurants, bars and nightclubs are smoke-free indoors but many have heaters outside in winters and tables placed outside for smokers during summer time.
