Shopping

Oslo is the perfect city for all those who are looking for handcraft, textiles, woollens, ceramic or objects made from tin. Especially the two big department stores “Glasmagasin” and “Steen & Strøm” offer a wide choice of traditional products. The most important shopping streets are the Karl Johan gate, Grensen and Bogstadveien. Latter is packed with shops, market stalls and department stores of every conceivable description. Aker Brygge, which is already known for its liveliness and its variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, is Oslo's first big shopping centre (website: www.akerbrygge.no). Another ideal shopping adventure is offered by the 1980s built shopping centre “Oslo City” behind the Central Station (www.oslocity.no). Arts-and-crafts and jewellery is available ate the “Basarhallen”, a bazaar behind the cathedral .Typical clothes and woollens can be purchased best at “Husfliden” (www.husfliden.no/oslo ) Møllergata 4. Art galleries, special boutiques and shops for art crafts line up in Grünerløkka and Frogner. There are daily markets, some of them specialised in flowers or fish others offer something of everything. The open air market in Oslo is called “Stortorget” and takes place at the square with the same name from 10 am – 4 pm. Here you can get souvenirs and flowers, and an indoor market offering antiques, handcrafts, jewellery. If you are shopping in Norway you should keep in mind that it is not cheap, especially at tourist shops or special shops that are connected to a factory. But some bargains can be found in the less specialised shops.

Shops are open on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 or 2 pm. Supermarkets and big shopping malls have different opening times, especially in big city the latter ones are open until 8 pm during the week and until 6 on Saturdays.
