Paris has cafés and bars all over the city, and there is an incredible variety of different kinds of establishments. Cafés range from informal places where people from the neighbourhood hang out, to chic and sophisticated ones where the well-to-do go to be seen. At most cafés, drinks are cheaper if you sit at the bar than if you take a table. Many cafés and bars offer meals, though usually only during limited hours. Sandwiches and snacks are the most common fare. Both food and drinks are surprisingly expensive at cafés and bars in Paris. Even at relatively down-to-earth establishments prices might start at €3 or 4 for a half-bottle of mineral water. Most people use cafés as places to relax and people-watch, and usually linger over their food or drinks. Bars are popular places to go dance as well as sit and drink, and the city has a wide range of types of bars, something for every taste.
