Opéra Garnier
Commonly known simply as the “Paris Opera,” this famous opera house built by Charles Garnier is striking and opulent. When it opened in 1875 it was the largest theatre and opera house in the world, and took almost 15 years to build. The architecture is a mix of Baroque, classical and Napoleonic styles, and is lavish and decorative to the point of being over the top. The building’s acoustic and style are well-suited to opera, though few operas are currently put on here. There are some concerts of a variety of styles, but the venue is now mostly used for ballet performances.

Opéra Bastille
This venue is relatively new, and since its opening in 1989 has taken over the opera scene in Paris. The majority of the city’s operas are now put on here, instead of at the traditional Opera Garnier. The building of the Opéra Bastille is strikingly modern, and was constructed with the goal of making opera more relevant and accessible to the average person. Both opera and ballet perfomances are given here.
