Restaurants

Dining out in Paris is always a pleasure, as the French take their food very seriously. Whether the restaurants are traditional French ones or imported cuisines, the city has a reputation for top-notch gastronomy. There are as wide a variety of restaurants present as anyone could wish for, with some of the main foreign cuisines being Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese, Thai and African. Certain areas of the city are known for specific kinds of restaurants, such as the Latin Quarter which has a number of French bistros as well as several Chinese and Japanese restaurants. The area around Montmartre is fairly touristy in terms of restaurants, but is known for having restaurants of premium quality. In addition, Belleview has a variety of North African restaurants.

The French Cuisine
French cuisine is known for its pastries, world-famous cheeses, wines, distinctive sauces and more unusual delicacies such as snails and truffles. Particularly French pastries include croissants and other flaky breads and long baguette breads used for sandwiches or eaten with butter or cheese. Cheeses can be eaten with any meal and are also often eaten afterwards as a dessert. Snails (escargots) are a common dish or appetizer and are usually cooked, then garnished with a garlic sauce or other seasonings and put back in the shell. Most of the fashionable Parisian restaurants combine tradition with creative innovations to add unique flavours to the authentic cuisine. The most famous kind of French food is the elaborate haute cuisine served in expensive restaurants, but this does not reflect the kind of food eaten by the average French person. It is often true that older people in France tend to eat the traditional food of their region, while the younger generations eat a variety of dishes from foreign cuisines as well as traditional French food.
