Prague has a long tradition in coffee houses. As in Vienna the cafés used to be meeting point of artists and literates. Today cafés and bars try to get in touch again with this rich tradition. Apart from coffee houses, Prague is very famous for its beer. The beer restaurant or bar used to be for the Czech people what a church is for Polish people. During the time of the Habsburgs the pub used to be the centre of loud opposition against the rulers of the country. The language spoken in locations like that was Czech because most of the people were workers and intellectuals likewise. Somebody not going to a pub did basically not exist!
Cafés and Pubs can be found nearly everywhere in Prague. Most of the cafés also serve small dishes and snacks.
The brewing tradition in the Czech Republic goes back to the 10th century. The best known beers are without doubt the Pils (Pilsner Urquell), strong type of beer which used to be brewed for the first time in the Czech city Pilsen. Another famous beer is the Budvar (Budweiser).
