In more than 1000 years sculptors, architects, painters and literates, musicians and scientists created immortal works and shaped the picture of the city. As an architectural ensemble Prague unites different styles of art history from the Romantic period to Modern Times. But also the presence is characterised by a very lively and eventful art life. Prague possesses three operas, 24 public museums and numerous theatres and galleries. It is the city where the famous musical festival “Spring in Prague” takes place but it is also a stronghold for jazz and rock of all kinds. Additionally, Prague is a city known for movies. The Barandov Studios have an international reputation. Especially the cartoons of Jirí Trnka and Karel Zeman draw a lot of attention to the Czech film industry. The Czech movies became popular in the 60s and are known to have had an impact on the democratisation of the country. Apart from music and the movie world, Prague is well known for its literates such as Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke and Egon Erwin Kisch. Still today Prague can call itself home of a lot of literate people. The theatre in Prague has always been political. After having been able only to indicate social and political problems for years, the theatre is now evoking the population to discuss the situation in the country. The political changes in Germany also had an impact on the Czech Republic. Big theatres could only survive by sponsoring from abroad. Nevertheless the experimental theatre took a long time to make out the position in the theatre world. Today many of them are especially for foreign people. So performances are in English, German or Italian.
