National Museum (Natural Sciences Museum)
This famous and beautiful building is located at the top of Wenceslas Square. The style of the museum is Neo-Renaissance and the façade is very likely to be a copy of the East side of the Louvre in Paris. The entry hall, the staircase, the galleries and especially the cupola are decorated with paintings of national history and busts of famous Czechs. The collection of animals, vegetables, mineral specimens, archaeology and numismatics was started in 1818. Some of the Czech scientists wanted to give back a national awareness after having suffered under an age-long suppression. Today you find a broad scientific and a historic collection in the museum.

Antonín Dvorák Museum
Hidden behind iron gates lies the home of the Dvorák Museum, an elegant early 19th century baroque building. The villa was designed by Kilian Ignaz Dietzenhofer which is also responsible for the amazing St. Nicolas Church in Malá Strana. After having been a cattle market and a restaurant the building has been restored carefully and now contains a permanent exhibition about the life and work of Antonín Dvorák (1841 – 1904). The ceiling of the recital hall on the first floor is decorated with a fresco, Apollo, Pegasus and the Arts, by Johan Ferdinand Schor, whilst in the garden are sculptures of the Four Seasons from the workshop of Anton Braun.

The exhibitions are located in six different places: the Maiselova Synagogue, the Spanish Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Klausova Synagogue and the Ceremonial Hall. The Maiselova Synagogue contains exhibits depicting the first Jewish settlements in 1780. The exhibition in the Spanish Synagogue covers the history through to the present day. The Pinkas Synagogue is dedicated to the Bohemian and Moravian victims of the Holocaust. The Old Jewish cemetery which was established in the first half of the 15th century possesses the oldest surviving tombstone. Villa Bertramka (Mozart Museum)
The small museum is located in the suburb of Smíchov. Here Mozart completed Don Giovanni, the night before its premier in 1787. After a fire in 1870s the villa and gardens were destroyed and carefully restored afterwards. The collection of Mozart’s memorabilia is quite small. It includes for example historic scores, letters and musical instruments. Despite the small size the villa is worth a visit because the splendid rococo architecture and the tranquil gardens offer visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty that inspired Mozart.
