Restaurants

Prague’s gastronomy has changed a lot in the last couple of years. Restaurants of any kind sprang up like mushrooms and the offer of culinary pleasures is indeed one of a worldly city. Gourmets will have enough choice but also tourists who are in a hurry and just want to have a snack can choose out of a wide selection of restaurants. Some of the restaurants are very busy, so it is necessary to book in advance. Also be aware that prices in the garden of a restaurant are always higher than in the restaurant itself. Despite the huge choice of different restaurants the locals prefer the Czech cuisine which is affected by “Knödel” (dumplings) and roast pork. There are a lot of varieties in the dumplings, made from potatoes or bread, with bacon or with fruits like plums, cherries or apricots. There are no borders to your imagination.

Prague cuisine
The traditional civic Czech cuisine is rustic and shaped by meat and sauce, dumplings and few vegetables. Fish is not very common, although the lakes and rivers in the area around Prague offer a lot of fresh water fish which are served fresh, for example the Pstruh Smažený (crumbed trout). Czech starters usually consist of a soup for example a garlic soup or a goulash soup. In fine restaurants the soup is served with pieces of bread and cheese which are put as a topping on the soup. There are also other starters, served either cold or warm, like cod liver, ham rolls or cheese. As mentioned the Czech cuisine focuses on meat and sauce. The meat is boiled, fried or baked. A speciality is venison which is often served with dumplings made of bread or potatoes. Vegetables are not very common as a side dish. Sometimes the menu also includes fish, mainly trout or carp. After the main dish a rich desert completes the dinner. Typical for the Czech cuisine is the “Palaccinka“, a pancake, which is served with different sauces. Another delicious desert is a sweet dumpling filled with fruits or marmalade. The common drink to your dinner is a Pils or Pilsener beer, a strong type of beer which used to be brewed for the first time in the Czech city Pilsen. Another beer brewed in the Czech Republic is the Budvar (Budweiser).
