The centre of Rotterdam has bars and cafés all over the place, and there are ones to suit all tastes. A popular nightlife area with many cafés and bars is the Oude Haven, the district around the old harbour, and Kralingen and Oustplein also have a high concentration of bars. You will find traditional Dutch pubs, trendy cocktail bars, down-to-earth jazz bars, Irish pubs, and more. Many bars feature locally brewed beers and jenevers (Dutch gins.) The traditional café/bars in Holland are old “brown cafés,” so named because of the colour of the walls after so many people smoking in them. These bars are usually cozy and pleasant, and less expensive than the trendy modern bars. Many bars serve meals, though after 10 pm it can be hard to find ones offering more than snacky bar food. Most bars and late-night cafés stay open until 12 or 1 am, and some bars stay open until dawn on the weekends.
