Het Schielandshuis
This museum is located in a 17th century mansion, the only building from this period that survives in Rotterdam. It is dedicated to the art and culture of Rotterdam through the ages, brought to life through many permanent and changing exhibits. There are displays about influential Rotterdammers as well as the lives of the common people, many works of art, photographs, an interesting collection of maps and more. The interior of the musuem has been carefully restored to its Baroque and Rococo style.

Maritiem Museum Rotterdam
Home to a noted nautical collection, the maritime museum was founded by Prince Hendrik in 1874. It is located on the Leuvehaven harbour and takes visitors through the history of seafaring in Holland. The first floor is all about shipbuilding, and the second has models, nautical instruments and artifacts, figure heads, steam engines, and other equipment. A significant section of the musuem is geared towards children and has many interactive activities and exhibits.

Boijmans van Beuningen
An impressive all-round art museum, the Boijmans van Beuningen museum includes works from the middle ages up to the present day and has one of the best collections of paintings in Europe. It is organized into four sections, with the Old Art collection housing a variety of Western European art from the 14th century onwards, and includes works by Dutch masters such as Rubens and Rembrandt. The print collection features drawings, with notable works by Pisanello and Cézanne. There is a section dedicated to modern art, and an applied arts department, featuring decorative objects and crafts from the middle ages to the present.

Natuurmuseum
This natural history museum features dramatic and engaging exhibits and is located in an old villa, with a large glass wing added on. As soon as visitors enter, they are unexpectedly face to face with a mounted enormous hairy gorilla. Further attractions include an impressive collection of skeletons, many of which are of ancient and unusual creatures, taxidermic specimens, exhibits on the characteristics and habits of certain animals, and many child-friendly displays. One of the most memorable items on display is the 40-foot-long sperm whale skeleton.

Chabot Museum
This small yet fascinating musuem displays the private collection of Henk Chabot, one of the leading Dutch expressionists. A painter and sculptor, most of Chabot’s works were made between the two world wars. He is known for his sensitive depictions of peasants, gardeners, refugees and prisoners.
