Salzburg has a long tradition when it comes to coffee houses and cafes. The first café in the city opened in 1703 – the Tomaselli which has survived the turbulences of time and is still serving coffee today. It is not only Austria’s oldest café but also the oldest one in the Western World. Salzburg has a lot of Viennese cafes which maintain their style, their pastry bars and waiters in dinner jackets just like a hundred years ago. This makes staying at a café in Salzburg so special. Every tourist coming to Austria should go to a café at least once and since there are a couple of good ones in Salzburg, finding one should not be a problem.
Of course there are not only traditional coffee houses in Salzburg but also normal cafes and bistros that offer different kind of coffees, teas and cold drinks as well as a variety of snacks. As a touristy city, prices might also be quite high especially in the old town at traditional houses serving pastries and chocolates.
