By air
The Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart is the second biggest airport in Austria and lies in the region around the city of Salzburg. The airport started up in 1926 and was named after the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The airport includes two terminals which can handle about 1400 passengers per hour. The number of travellers is more than 1.800.000 per year and thanks to the high ambitions in winter tourism the numbers are increasing. Although being a passenger airport, Salzburg’s W. A. Mozart also handles about 11.500 tons of cargo annually. But since there are no separate cargo flights leaving the airport, load is transported in passenger planes.

Between 11 pm and 6 am the airport has a special embargo for night flights. Machines with heavy engines are even forbidden service between 8 pm and 7 am. The only exceptions are ambulance flights which are allowed 24 hours per day.

The airport operates charter flights to the international airports in Great Britain, Russia and Scandinavia. Within line operations the airport approaches the international airports of Frankfurt am Main, Vienna, Zurich, Paris and Dusseldorf. The most important airline is the Austrian Airlines Group. Other airline companies operating from the Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart are Ryanair and TUIfly.

The airport is located in about 4 km distance to the city centre of Salzburg and about 2 km away from the German border. Public transportation provides a bus line (bus number 2) that connects the airport with the city. Also the following bus lines can be used:

Bus Nr. 260: Salzburg Central Station - Salzburg Airport
Bus Nr. 180: Salzburg Central Station - Salzburg Airport

Both lines have further destinations after passing the Salzburg airport. Cars can reach the location via the western motorway A1 and the Viennese Road (Austria) B1.

More information on daily flights, schedules and information about using rooms for conventions and meetings can be found on the airport’s website.

By train
Salzburg has one of the most important national and international train connections in Austria which includes the Westbahn, a railroad line that reaches from Vienna to Salzburg via Linz. The Westbahn is Austria’s most important railway line and belongs to ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen – Austrian Federal Railways). From Salzburg you can also get to Italy, Graz, Slovenia in the South, as well as to Munich and Innsbruck. The German Federal Railways runs connections to Salzburg from many German cities for example an Inter City line from Frankfurt am Main. Night trains and Eurocity trains are also operating to Salzburg. The ÖBB offers special deals, seasonal prices, night trains, travel plans for Europe as well as city tickets. The area around Salzburg and destinations within the city can easily be reached by S-Bahn which is a fast, cheap and on-time alternative to the car. The S-Bahn line is connected to the inner-city and regional bus lines which makes travelling in and around Salzburg very easy and comfortable.

Salzburg is reachable by car via the motorway A1 (Vienna – Salzburg), A 8 (Munich – Salzburg) and A 10 (Salzburg – Villach) which are creating a half ring road in the west of the city. Motorway exits to Salzburg are Salzburg Nord, Salzburg Messegelände, Salzburg Mitte, Salzburg Klessheim Salzburg Siezenheim, Salzburg Flughafen, Salzburg West and Salzburg Süd. The A1 is the motorway to the airport but it can also be seen as a city motorway which results in frequent traffic jams.
