Flamenco
Flamenco is an individualistic, yet structured folk art that is around 200 years old and originated in the South of Spain. Song (el cante), guitar (el toque) and dance (el baile) are melting together and present the passionate rhythms of Andalusia. The mostly spontaneous and improvised rhythms with their tragic lyrics and tones clearly reflect the sufferings of the gypsy people from whom the flamenco comes from. The roots of flamenco lie in the tradition of singing which gives an important role to the singer. The guitar was originally used as an accompanying instrument. But today solo flamenco guitar music has split off and developed as a single form of art which is often blended with jazz, blues or even pop music.
The patterns of flamenco have to be differentiated into rhythm and complicated footwork for which special shoes or boots are used in whose bottom dozens of nails are driven. The upper body of the dancer stays in a posture emphasizing grace and pride. There are two main styles of flamenco: the “jondo” which is serious and reflects the cry of people, and the “chico” which is on the contrary happy and cheerful. Hereby the song is the basic which gives inspiration to the guitar and the dancer.
Flamenco can be experienced in so called “tablao” (flamenco shows), “peña” (a flamenco club) or at one of the many festivals and events. Professional dancers and musicians usually perform a couple of times per night. Seville is one of the best cities in Spain to watch the flamenco music and dance. Some tablaos are listed below:
