General Archives of the Indies
The Archives of the Indies was founded in 1785 and housed in the building of the former stock exchange of Seville “Casa Lonja de Mercaderes”. The minister of that time José de Gálvez y Gallardo initiated the foundation in order to collect all documents regarding the Spanish colonies under one roof and complete the colonial history of Spain. The stock contains 43.000 documents which range over 80 million pages. Between 2002 and 2004 the building was reconstructed and reorganised. In 2005 a digitalising project was started which is going to make all documents available on the internet. The archive is open for all people with a legitimate interest and a valid user ID. The working facilities for researchers and archivists were moved to a close-by building.

Archaeological Museum
The Archeological Museum which has its origin in the 19th century is located in a neo-renaissance building according to the design of Aríbal González. The building is only one example of his work for the Ibero-American exhibition of 1929. The museum exhibits artefacts of different origins in chronological order. One of the most interesting pieces os the so called “Tesoro del Carambolo” which is a copy of the “Carambolo Treasure” that dates back to 650 B.C. and is now stored in a bank safe of the Banco de Santander. The 21 golden pieces relate to old Iberian tribe of Tartessos. The museum consists of three floors. On the ground floor prehistoric artefacts are displayed in a strict chronological and cultural order according to their locations. The main floor shows material from Roman times and later that were found in the nearby city of Itálica. The first floor is mainly used for administration and conferences but it also contains a room for temporary exhibitions.
