General Information
St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia, is situated in the North-West of Russia in the Neva River delta on the Eastern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The abundance of islands has led to the construction of a multitude of bridges. Has a maritime climate, with a moderately warm summer and a rather long moderately cold winter.

St. Petersburg is a relatively new city. It was created in 1703 by Peter the Great as a sea port on the Baltic. After 10 years it became the capital of Russia and retained this status till 1918. During the Soviet period the name was changed in Leningrad, which was changed again after 1991.

Over almost 300 years of its history St. Petersburg accumulated all the grandeur of the Russian Imperial Court and became one of the largest centers of culture, with abundant monuments of architecture and culture, city construction and landscape art of the 18-19th centuries. European and world cultures are reflected in its more than 4000 ensembles and monuments, in 250 museums, 50 theatres, 80 art galleries. St. Petersburg is also a city of theatres. Many of St. Petersburg''s theatres have a long history and fine traditions.
