For such a small city, Tallinn has a surprising amount of modern cultural institutions and events. It is also steeped in the culture of its long history, and has some of the oldest architecture in northern Europe. Very few medieval cities are so well-preserved, and in Tallinn you can really get a feel for what it was like in the 14th and 15th centuries.
There are more than fifteen musuems in the city, an impressive opera house, many different kinds of theatres, a quirky art house cinema, and a number of galleries. The city is home to many festivals throughout the year, such as Days of the Old Town and the Estonian Song and Dance Festival. Tallinn is also particularly known for its strong choral tradition, and has many professional choral groups featured in the International Festival of Choral Singing.
