City Theatre (Linnateater)
This is a repertory theatre home to Tallinn’s most beloved acting company. They are well-known for their artistic, high quality performances, and offer a varied programme every year, including many open-air productions in the summer. The building housing the theatre is also special, a distinctive medieval building with seven different performance spaces. Call at least a month in advance for tickets, as productions here sell out very quickly.
Estonian Drama Theatre
The drama theatre is a unique example of Art Nouveau architecture in Tallinn, which stands out from the other buildings that are mainly medieval or modern. It was built in 1910, and for almost a century has offered a variety of interesting and high-quality productions. Nearly all plays are in Estonian, and range from old classics to contemporary works.
Estonian Puppet Theatre
This unique puppet theatre has been a popular source of local entertainment since 1952, and has now become a well-known attraction. It includes four different performance halls, as well as an open-air area. The shows are delightfully fresh and creative, combining puppetry with acting, sound-effects, shadows, and colourful lights. Performances are in Estonian, but whether or not they understand the words, all young children love the bright puppets and fun characters, and can often follow the stories visually.
Von Krahl Theatre
This theatre is dedicated to avant-garde productions and is the oldest private theatre in Estonia. It is also one of the leading experimental theatres in the country, and has a core company of six young actors eager to try new things. Shows here are known to combine theatre with elements of cabaret and opera, and many multi-media sound and visuals are incorporated as well. After the show, people like to hang out in the theatre bar and discuss the performance.
Theatrum
An intimate studio theatre, Theatrum is a non-profit theatre started in 1994 by students from the Estonian Humanities Institute. It puts on a wide variety of productions every year, some by professionals and some by students. The theatre connects to the Dominican Monastery on the third floor, and the monastery sometimes cooperates with the theatre and hosts theatre events through its whole complex. In the warm weather, open-air theatre is sometimes held in the monastery courtyard.
