The Hague has an extremely rich cultural scene, and sometimes there are so many concerts, plays, dance performances, and exhibitions going on at one time that it is overwhelming. The cultural institutions in the city include music halls, multi-purpose theatres, a special dance theatre, galleries, exhibition houses, and museums. One of the best art museums is the Mauritshuis, which features old Dutch masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt in a beautiful 17th century house. For contemporary art, there is the GEM museum with a really outstanding collection, as well as a number of private galleries. The biggest centres for classical music and theatre are the Koninklijke Schouwberg and the Lucent Danstheater/Anton Philipszaal, a venue featuring both dance, theatre, and music. Amidst all of these cultural events are a number of architecturally significant buildings, both old and new.
Scheveningen is a hotspot for cultural events during the summer, but basically shuts down in the colder months when few people come to the seaside.
