Utrecht is a wonderful city in which to visit cafés and bars, with lovely canal-side terraces, little neighbourhood cafés on cobblestoned streets, and a wide variety of bars ranging from cocktail and jenever bars to classic Dutch “brown” pubs. These last are so named because of the stains on the walls from so many years of people smoking in them, but Holland has recently become completely smoke-free in cafés, bars and restaurants (as of July 1, 2008.) Most of the city’s cafés and bars are clustered in the centre of town, and any stroll through these old streets will take you past many nice places to stop for a drink. In general, cafés offer lunch and dinner menus, and some also serve breakfast. Pubs and bars usually have more limited food on offer, but often serve at least bar food such as tapas, bitterbollen, or cheese squares with mustard.
