Utrecht is one of the main hotspots for culture in the Netherlands, with numerous concerts, theatre and dance performances, cinemas, international festivals, and a diverse array of musuems and galleries. In terms of its number of cultural events, the city is second only to Amsterdam, and it is also home to Utrecht University, the largest university in the country. Utrecht has long been a centre for learning and the arts, and intends to dedicate even more attention to these areas in order to become the “cultural capital” of Europe by 2018. Important festivals that take place every year in Utrecht include the Netherlands Film Festival, the Early Music Festival, and the Blues Festival. The Vredenburg, one of the largest, most versatile and most prestigious concert halls in Holland is also located in Utrecht. There are also many rock and hip-hop venues in the city, and clubs featuring a wide variety of live music. The theatre scene in Utrecht is diverse, and while cabaret and musicals are very popular, you can also find serious drama, comedy, improv, experiemental theatre, and more.
