Utrecht is a relatively quiet city by day, but has a surprisingly lively nightlife scene. All over the city, but particularly in the centre, there are clubs, cinemas, dance and music venues, and bars open late. The club scene is varied enough for there to be something for everyone, with trendy young adult clubs, exclusive and sophisticated clubs, student hangouts, and alternative clubs. Discos are popular, and many cafés or restaurants turn into “dance cafés” by night. The music of choice is generally a mix of techno, house, and funk, and often includes old-style disco music and rather insipid Dutch pop. In many of the hipper, more sophisticated clubs, people really dress up and emphasize being fashionable, while in others dress is not an issue at all. In alternative clubs, on the other hand, you might stand out if you are not dressed in punk, goth, or similar attire. And as a culture capital, Utrecht does not disappoint late at night, and offers many concerts, plays, late-night comedy acts, and other arts events on a nightly basis.
