The inside is also very cozy, however, and music performances often take place here, such as folk, jazz, or Dutch pop concerts. This café has a party atmosphere every night due to the lively, hip tunes they are always blasting. If you enjoy loud, crowded bars that attract lots of young people, this is a great place to come for a good time. It has many regulars and is also popular with tourists. Café ‘t Gras van de Buren
An old fashioned café that appears rather stuffy on first glance, it is actually very cozy and pleasant. They serve all the usual drinks and a nice range of small snacks or ‘hapjes,’ such as bitterbollen, crab cakes, salads and more, which vary depending on the season. There is a nice terrace as well.

Stadscafé Heerenplein
This café/bar is located diagonally across from the Stadsschouwburg, inside an elegant old villa. The décor is reminiscent of an English pub, though somehow the atmosphere doesn’t quite match. It is a pleasant and friendly place to drink, however, with attractive wooden panelling, a pretty canalside terrace, and an island bar located in the middle of the interior. The bar doesn’t really get going until after dark, and then attracts a mix of students, trendy young people, tourists and more. Prices are reasonable.

Bert’s Bierhuis
A unique beer shop that some also refer to as a “beer musuem,” Bert’s Bierhuis began as the hobby of founder Bert de Ruyter. He began collecting as many different kinds of beer as he could, and when he first opened he had 150 varieties on offer. This number has now grown to over 800 different kinds of beer, and beer lovers will be delighted by the amazing choice and many rare and exotic brews.

''t Dorstige Hart
A small and cozy one-room pub, ‘t Dorstige Hart is located on a quiet street parallel to the Oudegracht. The bar is yet another in Utrecht that somewhat styles itself after an English pub, and has simple décor with formica-topped tables, a dart board, and a relatively small, friendly bar area. It is not open during the day, only from the later evening.

Orloff
A conveniently located bar in the centre of town, Orloff is near to many other good drinking establishments, making it a perfect stop on a pub crawl. It’s a classic brown café, or “light brown café” as some of the Dutch would call it, since the brown stains on the walls do not completely cover the original colour. There is some random 1920s décor scattered about, including a great old clock behind the bar, and they have an outdoor terrace in the summer.

‘t Heen en Weer
Located just down the street from Orloff, ‘t Heen en Weer has a great location on a corner, with the back of the bar facing the Oudegracht. Another standard brown café, it has an elegant and classic interior with wooden floorboards, wood panelling, and nice furniture. They have a great deal of beer memorabilia collected on the walls, but don’t be fooled and expect more than the typical limited selection of Dutch and Belgian beers.

Ledig Erf
A cozy pub in a historic building, Ledig Erf has a beautiful location on the corner where the Oudegracht meets the Singel, which used to be the city’s moat. It advertises itself as a beer and chess pub, and most of the tables have chess boards on them. They have a wonderful selection of beers from all over, and the staff is very friendly and welcoming.
