Utrecht is an ideal place to shop as it is small and the shops are clustered in the centre of town, yet there is a wonderful variety of stores, from charming local establishments to grand, modern shopping malls, and you can find top international brands as well as many unique local products. The narrow cobblestone streets of the city centre are a lovely place to hop from one store to another, and motorized traffic is banned from most areas in the heart of the city, making the shopping experience more pleasant. Streets that are particularly good for shopping include the Oudegracht, with a wide variety of popular chains and boutiques, the Oudkerkhof with many upscale stores, the Lijnmarkt and Lange Elizabethstraat for fashion, as well as the Zadelstraat and the Schoutenstraat for antiques, used books and other unique items. There are also many markets in the city, most of which take place once or twice a week. And if you like shopping malls, Hoog Catharijne is one of the most famous malls in the Netherlands, located at the heart of the city and attached to the central train station. It has two levels and dozens upon dozens of shops, including clothing boutiques for men and women, department stores, jewellery stores, health and beauty stores, candy stores, fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, and more.
