Literaire Boekhandel Lijnmarkt
Located right in the heart of town, this is one of the best bookshops in Utrecht and has an excellent selection of both Dutch and English literature, many books in translation, poetry, children’s books, magazines and more. They have been recognized as having the best selection of poetry in the city and call themselves Utrecht’s “Podium for Poetry.” The staff is well-read, knowledgeable and very helpful, and the store is cozy and very pleasant to browse in.

De Wijze Kater
Long known as one of the most esoteric and unique bookshops in the city, De Wijze Kater has been around since the mid-1980’s and specializes in books on psychology, all kinds of spirituality, well-being, yoga, and eastern philosophy. There are many Dutch books as well as featured works by Indian and American authors, and many books are in English.
Slegte Boekhandel en Antiquariaat
A large used book store with an excellent selection, Slegte has many foreign language books in addition to Dutch ones. Their books cover basically all categories, including literature, poetry, mysteries, cooking, spirituality, philosophy, children’s books and more. There are some new books in addition to used ones, and they also sell maps and tourist guides.
WM den Hertog Beheer
This bookstore is located a bit further afield, but is worth the extra trip if you have the time as it offers a special assortment of books, CDs, and sheetmusic and great bargains can be found here. They specialize in literature, children’s books and theology, but cover many other topics as well. There are of course many Dutch books as well as some English ones and a small section with some other languages.
