Museo San Pío/Museo de Bellas Artes
This art museum houses an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures, and is especially strong in Flemish and local Valencian art. Highlights include several works by Velazquez, Goya, Morales, El Greco, and Bosch. The most famous painting in the museum is Velázquez’s self-portrait from 1640. There is also a whole room featuring Goya, and a special collection of Valencian paintings from the 14th and 15th century. Contemporary artists are represented as well, in a salon dedicated to modern Valencian painters and sculptors. The ground floor of the museum includes an archaeological collection with artifacts from Iberian, Roman, and early Christian times. The original museum has recently been expanded by the addition of a large annex, which has greatly increased the amount of works on display. Admission is free.

Museo Nacional de Cerámica
This museum has a wonderful local character, as it features the ceramics for which the Valencia region is famous. Valencia has long been the captial of Spanish ceramic production, and is particularly known for its Lladró porcelain. The museum also has many other kinds of ceramics, from all over the world and from ancient as well as modern times. The variety is fascinating, from crude earthenware pots to ornate and enamelled decorative ceramics in all colours, shapes and sizes.

Museo Fallero
This is a museum that you wouldn’t find anywhere but in Valencia, as it is based around a typically Valencian tradition. It houses giant papier maché and balsa wood figures that are made every year for the Las Fallas festival. These giant figures are accompanied by smaller ones (approximately life size), called “ninots.” All of the figures are decorated and carefully painted, but on the day of the festival they are burnt. The burning is a dramatic spectacle, with flames reaching high into the sky from dozens of gigantic figures. Since 1935, one ninot has been chosen each year to preserve in the Fallas Museum. Before the burning, the public votes on which ninot will be saved, and by now there is quite an extensive collection, presenting a colourful and artistic representation of Valencia history.

Instituto Valencia de Arte Moderno (IVAM)
This contemporary art museum was influential in stimulating new arts organizations in Valencia, and its opening was a major event for the city’s art scene. The museum is now an arts centre complex in two parts, including an avant-garde modern building as well as a former convent building from the 13th century. The old part of the museum is now home to the Julio González centre, opened in 1989, which features the paintings, sculptures, and drawings of the cutting-edge Spanish artist. The museum’s new building is called the Center del Carmen, and has three halls featuring changing contemporary exhibitions. There is also a permanent collection, featuring the works of several artists, including Ignacio Pinazo, one of the first moden artists active in Valencia.
