Public transport
The only two ways to explore Venice are by water - buses (vaporetti) and by walking. Be prepared to get lost in the complicated maze of tiny allies, small piazzas and many dead end streets. The city is full with footbridges and getting lost in its wonderful streets is all part of the experience.
Cars, scooters and bicycles are not allowed in the city.
Venice
By water buses (vaporetti)
Waterbuses are operated by ACTV and have about a dozen lines around the city. Transit maps are available at the tourist office and in most ACTV stations. Do keep in mind that the waterbuses travel in the Grand Canal and in the outskirts, so it is easier to get to small canals on foot.
Venice
By taxis
Water taxis (Taxi acquel) charge the highest taxi fees in Europe. A short seven minutes drive will cost approximately 14. It is very difficult to catch a water taxi, so it is wise to call for one:
Radio Taxi tel. +39 041 936222
Water Taxis tel. +39 041 5415084
Ferrovia tel. +39 041 716286
Piazza San Marco tel. +39 041 5229750
Registered water taxis have a black number on a yellow background. Illegal water taxi operators can charge you much higher fees; so make sure to get on a registered taxi.
Venice
By Gondola
Taking a gondola ride in Venice is extremely romantic and a true Venetian experience, but a gondola ride is very expensive. Gondolas depart from Piazzale Roma, St. Marks Square, the train station and the Rialto.
