From traditional food, pastry, meat specialities to the cuisine of different countries which have found their way into the mouths of Vienna’s people, you can find everything according to your desires. Beside Italian and Spanish restaurants there is Asian food of any kind, African dishes as well as Kebab-shops. A lot of restaurants offer a selection of wines and beers but there are also special beer and wine bars, where you can find drinks for every taste.
The Viennese Cuisine
The traditional Viennese cuisine is formed by early influences of the immigrants from other regions and countries of the k.u.k monarchy. Because of the close position to Hungary and the former region of Bohemia one finds mainly dishes from these countries on the menu. For example the goulash, which can be found as Wiener goulash, Fiaker goulash or gypsy goulash, has its origins in Hungary. Dishes from Bohemia are chiefly confections of pastry such as strudel, Golatschen and pancakes (Palatschinken) but also dumplings (Knödel) which are served with roast pork. But the most famous and loved speciality is the Wiener Schnitzel which originates in Milan. You can find this dish in nearly every restaurant. Usually it is served with a potato salad. Apart from the traditional Viennese kitchen you also find restaurants serving dishes from other parts of Austria, such as Salzburger Nockerln, Tiroler Gröstl or Kärntner Kasnocken.
A lot of regions in Vienna are characterized by its chippies selling different hot sausages. Beside the Frankfurter, which are known in Austria as Wiener, you can get Burenwurst and Käsekrainer, which are very popular among locals. If liked they are served with pickles, pepers, sweet or hot mustard and a slice of bread or a roll. A standard product of every chippy is the liver loaf (Leberkäse). During the winter months there are small stands selling chestnuts, baked potatoes, potato pancakes or roasted almonds.
The biggest and most diverse market is the Naschmarkt, where you can buy fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, fish, meat and a lot of other things from all over the world. In the city centre there are some small speciality shops like Julius Meinl.
During the last couple of years the cuisine of different countries as Italy or China, got very popular. Nowadays you also find Japanese, Indian and Vietnamese restaurants in Vienna. Beside the Asian food you can get Greek African or South American dishes. Fast-Food-Franchiser and Kebab-shops became huge competitors for the traditional sausage chippies.
