Vienna offers quiet a lot to shopping freaks, especially the inner city with its narrow streets as well as the pedestrian zones on Kärntnerstrasse and Graben which meet at the Haas Haus. The shopping paradise par excellence is however the Mariahilferstrasse, which stretches from the Ringstrasse with its shoppings centres towards the Westbahnhof. You find department stores, Gerngross as well as the major international stores selling clothes, music or other common things.
But Vienna also offers a couple of nice markets, the most known is definitely the Naschmarkt where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, small shops and eateries. The Flea Market where loads of bargains in second-hand goods can be purchased, is close to the Naschmarkt.
In general shops are open from Monday to Friday 9 am – 5 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm. Some shops are also open until 9.30 pm on Thursdays and until 7.30 pm on Fridays. The VAT of 20% can be reclaimed by visitors from outside the EU. In order to do that you have to fill a tax-cheque by the time of purchase. At the airport your purchased items need to be taken to the customs clearance where the customs official will provide a tax stamp which can be cashed at any of the airport banks in a variety of currencies.
