Heichelheim Dumpling Museum
Only a few kilometer away from Weimar lies Heichelheim. There is the „Kloßmuseum“ where not only seminars are held but also old devices for the preparation of dumplings are exhibited. Furthermore the history of the potato is depicted. The oldest dumpling manufacture was founded in 1968 in Thuringia. Until then the potatoes had been rubbed by hand and squeezed out in a cloth. Even today some people swear that this is the best method to get traditional dumplings. Since 1999 the Thuringian Kloßmuseum is located in the historic manufacturing place where not only the history of the potato and the dumpling can be viewed but also different activities are held to attract visitors.

Schiller’s Residential House
This is the middle-class house in which Schiller spent the last three years of his life. Today it is furnished in the style of Schiller’s time, partly with the original equipment. On the ground floor the kitchen and the economic area is located. On the first floor the visitor can have a look at the living room, the assembly room, the sleeping room of Schiller’s wife Charlotte and the rooms for the two daughters. Buchenwald Memorial
On the Ettersberg close to Weimar the concentration camp Buchenwald was located between 1937 and 1945. More than 250.000 people from almost 50 nations were imprisoned; about 50.000 people didn’t survive the camp. In August 1945 the area was used by the Soviet occupying power as an internment camp. Until 1950 28.000 people had been imprisoned, over 7000 died. The memorial lies about 10 km north of the city centre of Weimar. Apart from four permanent exhibitions you can view the buildings of the former camp, the gate building with the arrest cells, the watch towers, the crematorium, the chamber buildings and disinfection, the station, SS areas, the mine and the cemetery. There are guides tours but even if you like to tour on your own you find a lot of signage which lead you through the straggly area. Also accessible is the monument of Fritz Cremer which is showing the famous figure statue.
