Budapest is becoming more and more of an international city, and the variety of shopping opportunities has recently become much more diverse. The small charming shops of the city for the most part remain, but have become more interesting and offer a wider selection of styles and kinds of items. There have also been several recent additions of malls, shopping centres and department stores. Since the small boutiques now have these mega-establishments to compete with, they have become much more hip and cool and somewhat elitist as a result.
There are many markets in Budapest that can be fun to explore, particularly flea markets. These can be great places to find bargains, as well as some weird random stuff. Food markets are one of the best places to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, grown locally in the surrounding countryside.
One of the most famous shopping streets is Váci utca, a scenic pedestrian street with many boutiques, bookstores, and other shops.
