Eco tourism now!! or maybe later ….
I am always amazed at how human beings suppress reality when it comes to our pleasure. It was almost half a year ago when I read that another hotel king or mogul had decided to build another mega resort with its casinos. The resort is designed be able to serve out 20.000 guests. It will be more a super luxury city, where the inhabitants can find themselves among the billionaires of this world. It has a futuristic quality, you get served with another 20.000 people and you do not have to worry about anything; almost every desire of the guest will be taken care of.
Once you are in that kind of environment you will probably feel that the whole world is living under the same circumstances. And above all there will be no bureaucrat questioning you about your income. Of course this is nothing but a semi-illusion. But hey, who doesn’t need illusions. The reality is that once built, it will produce at least ten times more pollution and consume at least 2000 times more energy per capita then any city in a developed country. Furthermore, it can only be sustained if all of this will be provided by cheap labor and I mean very, very cheap labor. And anyone who knows anything about the new economic tigers knows where this very cheap labor will come from. Let’s stick to the head of this article since this article is not about cheap labor, although dear reader, I can tell you a lot about cheap labor. I would like to use this opportunity to channel something which has been bothering me and on which I’m unable to find either a solution or a rational explanation for the behavior of my species. One would say, based on the environmental disaster that we are all in that we would be more considered with our actions. The truth is, the way we are handling is everything but “considered”.

One cannot expect a businessman to drop his plans for building a “paradise”, if the new self-appointed “Angel” of Mother Nature falls short of the behavior he proclaims. It was indeed an “inconvenient truth” for our Angel when it turned out to be that Mr. Gore was using 20 times more electricity then an average American household. It wasn’t only an American whose statements were inconsistent with his behavior. Almost in the same week some members of the EU thought that since the environment now has public focus that they should also come with some statement. When asked about his 4Wheel drive, Mr. Barroso bluntly answered that his choices were private and that he was not intending to be an example figure. Maybe this bluntness represents the intelligence level of our species. We all do want to breathe more clean air; we all do want to see the polar bear for ever on the poles, but when it comes to truly participating in the preservation of the same environment we wouldn’t mind should there be an exemption for us. The EU will soon implement a new additional environmental tax for its citizens. Be sure that EU politicians like Barroso will make themselves exempt from this kind of taxation, which is how they defend their own “Private choices”. As noted Barroso is just an example; when asked not even one of us would reject the offer of traveling around the world four times, or staying in a luxury hotel where we would be treated as kings or queens and consume only the best food one can get.

A couple of years ago, we from tobook had decided to participate in an eco-travel site, believing that a higher awareness level of humanity towards its environment would increase the demand for eco-travel and that this should be encouraged. We had decided to deliver the technology. To our surprise we barely had any requests for two years. It was sad to experience that there were barely any requests for eco-tourist type resorts while the number of reservations was increasing for luxury hotels.

Two years ago I would have been betting that the super luxury resort would be built for emptiness, but now reality shows that the demand for more luxurious accommodations will only rise. The filthier this planet gets, the more tensions will be within groups and hence there will be more demand for “tranquility”. A place where you can be, if you can afford of course, far from the daily misery of other humans or misery created by human kind. It would not surprise me that before the mid point of this century, some businessmen will come with a project where even the whole resort will be put in some sort of a dome, totally closed off from the atmosphere of the planet. By then this will be an alternative for the devastated atmosphere.

What ever the choice will be, dear reader & customer, tobook will be there to give you a better service, even if you have to book the paradisiacal dome.
