 | Open skies? |
 |
Since March the 30th of this year the so called “Open Skies” or (OAA = Open Aviation Area) has been in force between USA and the EU states. The agreement covers so called opening of the the hubs of USA and EU countries for internal flights. That is to say, eg a European company like Lufthansa can also start flying services within the USA and vice versa.
I couldn''t resist asking myself why it was closed in the first place, that was of course then again put in force to protect the local interest. Now apparently it is old-fashioned “our skies” needed to be opened again for full “fair” competition.
The regular traveler will probably not see any effect of this treaty at all, because of the fact that most of these airline companies have already long build alliances on order to be able to offer their customers full service in each others domain. Secondly none of the airlines are really waiting to open new routes in already very completive and costly territories.
If governments were really interested in bringing more convenience to the air traveler they should start to reduce the ridiculously high airport taxes which have been tripled in the last three years and a stop of increase of this airport tax is not in sight, yet.
One more thing, the treaty on which our civil servants have been working on for 3 years is not finalized, yet and is subject to couple of reevaluations. How much it has cost us already is unknown to me at this moment but my estimation is that is must be already around 10 million.
