Lufthansa strike causes flight cancellations
The escalation of the pay scale negotiations between the airline Lufthansa and the labour union Ver.di has led to a line of cancellations and delays on Lufthansa flights as ground and cabin staff is on strike. Ver.di demands a 9.8% pay hike for the about 52.000 employees, but Lufthansa is only offering a rise of 4.6% from the 1st of July 2008 and another rise of 2,1% from 1st of July 2009.

Since the negotiations have not been successful until now, strikes are going to be made possible at the end of June / beginning of August. The strikes until now had been a warning to Lufthansa but have already caused some cancellations and delays. The coming strikes would hit the airline’s traffic in the main holiday season very hard and it is already predicted that the strike could cost Lufthansa about 5 million Euro per day.

Lufthansa is also engaged in a pay scale conflict with the pilots of its subsidiary companies Eurowings, Germanswings and Cityline. This has caused a cancellation of more than 600 flights already on the first day. Affected were domestic flights as well as inner European routes. Like the ground and cabin staff, the pilots are demanding a pay rise which was not given to them over the past years.

Lufthansa advises all passengers to check their website, www.lufthansa.com, for flight information before departing. They also advised passengers to turn up earlier than usual for flights.
