It is possible to find the strait of Magallanes, which was the first path discovered by Hernando de Magallanes in 1521 who was serving to the Spanish crown. This Strait link to big oceans: The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, which confirmed the roundness of the earth.
The main cities are:
PUNTA ARENAS, the capital of the region, has 130.000 inhabitants. Punta Arenas has a great harbour which can receive big crafts or big cruise ships.
The main area of exportation is meat and wool from sheep. This richness has been exploited for at least 150 years now, with different results. In all this years there have been very productive moments and moments that were less good but nevertheless there has never been a big loss.
They have also a low petroleum production, but it has been replaced by oil fields under the sea, under the Strait of Magallanes.
This city has all the necessary services for a normal life.
Punta Arenas has a subterranean system for gas for the whole city and also supply of drinking water, electric lighting and sewer system.
The distances to travel to other cities of the country are huge.
The easiest way, however, is by plane since there are many airlines that offer ser vices. The Punta Arenas airport can handle any type of airplane. But apart from that there is also a possibility of travelling by bus.
There are many historical places in Punta Arenas. Fuerte Bulnes is one of them. A place where the city was found during 19th century. You can also visit colonies of penguins.
Furthermore, there are many historical museums that provide information about the development of the region. You can also visit the University and the public library.
The hotel service in the region is excellent with respect to quality and the prices are very much affordable. Some recommendable hotels are Hotel Cabo de Hornos, Finis Terra and Savoy which all offer a high standard of quality.
Punta Arenas is a very organized city, with broad avenues.
200 km from the city lies Puerto Natales, a very cosy city with about 30.000 inhabitants, casino and fantastic nature.
Also Torres del Paine and Tierra del Fuego are two places that should be on your list-to-see.
